Burr!!! While I am in California and experiencing rainstorms, most of the States and Canada are in snowdrifts, Europe is freezing and Vancouver is bringing in snow for the Olympics. Many folks are homebound and based on conversations with coaching clients, stressed to the max and eating too much. Read my article this month for some quick tips to relieve winter stress. The winter months are the perfect time for inner contemplation. Sometimes we might feel as if we are wrapped in a cocoon of warmth as the earth sleeps. Enjoy these moments of peace.

February is the time of year when our thoughts may turn to romantic love and I get to celebrate my birthday at the end of the month which adds to the mix. I can't help but love it. The realms of love are wide indeed, encompassing more than hearts and flowers and its mysterious impact on our lives, health, and emotional well-being cannot be denied. We are all interconnected and wrapped up in this essence. As a minister, when called to hospice, its the last thing spoken of, Remember to tell the people you love, that they are appreciated and loved often and over and over again. Every time you say it you are adding to your own self love and you can't have enough of it.

HOW TO RELIEVE WINTER STRESS

Step 1
Set priorities and make a schedule. Allow extra time for travel during inclement weather and maintain your routine of exercise and eating healthfully. Creating a winter plan helps to diminish stress and keep your life in order.

Step 2
Know when you have had too much or not enough time with family, and gently tell others. Request some time alone to read or write, or just to reflect on your life when you need it. Invite family and friends out when you feel stressed and alone; ask for help or just some company. Enjoy retrospective time.

Step 3
Exercise. Indoors, outdoors. Whatever works to move your body to increase circulation and improve your mood. Do your yoga practice. You combine fitness with flexibility and mental clarity.

Step 4
Meditate. This can be as simple as taking time to breathe and think about what causes stress in your life, or as complex as taking a guided meditation class with a professional meditation expert.

Step 5
Do something for yourself to help you relax. Laugh with friends, spend time journaling or get a massage. Just make sure you take time away from your stressors.

Step 6
Get natural sunlight to improve your mood. Garden if possible, clearing away leaves and dead plants to make room for spring growth. Start indoor plants from seeds or visit a greenhouse for a kick-start to your planning.

Step 7
Ease the amount of overeating and drinking you do. Eat healthy foods and drink at least eight (8 oz.) glasses of water a day. Taking care of yourself inside and out makes you feel better about yourself and more able to handle the winter challenges.
