What a summer! I want to welcome all the new subscribers to Inner Fitness
Living who attended one of the many events I participated in or lead. For
the many Warriors who attended camp, AHO! and to the corporate attendees who
experienced my trainings, your feedback has been nothing less than
spectacular. I appreciate all of you and your efforts to learn, expand and
grow. A special shout out to my fellow freshly minted Wizards who have been
a part of my own personal odyssey this summer into the unknown where we all
surrendered to a vision for all our lives. The essence of each one of you
will be with me for the rest of my life in having shared such an accelerated
experience of personal awareness that tested us far beyond our own
individual capacity. I feel honored to have shown you my vulnerability as
well as my strengths. So be it!
Now that the Fall has arrived, we turn our attention to not only getting
back to business, the kids back to school and another rhythm. It may feel
like a two ton truck hit some of you so needless to say go slowly. Always
keep yourself focused on the big picture and what truly is important. I know
for myself, it seems to get simpler as time goes on. Family, good friends,
staying healthy and loving a lot. So as the pace picks up, don't get caught
up in the small stuff and make sure you take good care of yourself in the
process.
I am happy to announce my first Canadian retreat in October. I am impressed
with the many Canadians I meet and if my experience is the norm, they are
the most gracious and nice people I have ever met and I have done some
serious traveling in my time. I hope you will join me. There is limited
space (next one in the Spring will be larger) so take advantage of the
intimacy and go deep with me to set the tone for a busy Fall and Winter. We
all have a lot to do in the world and are being called to serve. Let's set
the tone with the calm and centering of what I will offer you through yoga
and meditation to wisely listen to the truth of who you are. And of course,
we will dance and shake our bodies into ecstasy.

Re-entry In To The Fall Season
If you had the kind of summer as wild as mine or even a laid back and
relaxing one, we are all staggering a bit to begin the Fall. Let me remind
you to go slow. Fall is a great time to start a well-being program because
you're going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming
winter months. With the change of seasons comes a renewed time to rethink
and restart.
Here are a few ways to start making the most of the season.
1. Take advantage of the weather. Fall can be a treat for the senses: the
crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, a gorgeous canopy of fall
foliage, and the crunch of leaves underfoot. While Southern California does
not offer me that sensual delight like it would elsewhere, the air and
energy of the beach does change. I also get a chance to experience a
seasonal shift when I visit other cities to train or teach. These months are
a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. Walking,
hiking and cycling are all awesome in the fall which I do all year round.
Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you're walking,
biking, or in-line skating.
If you live near the beach, get out and play volleyball, throw the Frisbee
around, or play a vigorous game of fetch with your dog or if you're near a
lake, try kayaking or canoeing, for an excellent whole-body workout and a
great change of pace. I did this summer and boy did I get an amazing
workout.
2. Think outside the box. Always wanted to learn to tap dance? Attempt to
box? Master the jump rope? Fall is a great time to learn something new. I
was exposed to a lot of new things this summer that tested my comfort zone
and pushed me to see other sides of myself.
3. Integrate exercise into your life. You already know the obvious
suggestions: park farther away from your destination; take stairs instead of
elevators; take a walk during your lunch break. Here are a few that are less
obvious:
If you're spending the afternoon taking kids to soccer practice,
instead of reading a book or visiting with another parent, why not walk
around the outside of the field while they practice?
Or try "walking meetings" which I do regularly. It is productive
and gets the blood flowing along with ideas.
4. Rejuvenate yourself. Fall is the time to rejuvenate body, mind and
spirit. Get my tapes and finally learn to meditate and do yoga regularly.
Take an art class. Treat yourself not just with exercise but other
activities that promote wellness. Eat with seasonal foods so you are aligned
with Nature.
5. Remember the 30 day rule. It takes about four weeks for the body to adapt
to lifestyle changes. So, when the alarm goes off in the morning and it's
darker and colder, don't roll over and hit the snooze button. Stick with a
program for a month. After a month, behavior patterns will have adapted and
it will be much easier to stick with it after that.
6. Find your motivation. People are motivated by different things. It's
important to know what your individual goals are and stay focused. Remember
too, that anything worth having takes work. If it was easy to be great,
everybody would be great.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring
and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride
more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.

I don't know if you remember me from Warrior Camp (since there are hundreds and hundreds of us with you) but I was the one who couldn't stop crying every time I found myself in your presence. Thank you for so many things but most especially the love and care you somehow showered us all in. Your teaching of yoga and meditation was so clear and your awareness of the body profound when we danced. I have a smile on my face that won't go away.
